The creators of the Atari 2600, Atari, had a massive hold on the arcade game industry. They're first successful product was Pong. Of course, you can only make so much with an arcade machine that people have to explicitly go to. The logical next step was to make those arcade machines available for home use. At this time the Magnavox Odyssey had released, the first home console. It was successful, but nothing groundbreaking. Atari thought they could do better. They then crafted the Atari 2600. It had their most famous game on it: Pong. It had several other Atari developed arcade games too, like Combat. Atari later recieved a license to put Space Invaders in, which was a massive success. It was considered the Atari 2600's killer application. Later they also got Pac-Man to appear on the Atari 2600. Pac-Man was the best selling game on the Atari 2600.
